Hello my fellow bloggers and blog readers, I come bearing a question.
What kind of comments do you prefer?
It may seem like an odd question, but I’m serious. You see, when I’m commenting on someone else’s blog I’m always self conscious of my comments.
If I don’t have much to day - maybe only a couple words - I always feel like my comment is too short. I think Ah, I don’t want my comment to look like pointless spam. I try to leave at least a sentence, if I can.
But then if I have a lot to say, I feel like my comment is too long. They don’t want to read all this! There have been times that I leave a 3 or 4 paragraph long comment, but I always feel like I’m going to annoy the blogger if I do that too often. After all, you’ve got better things to do than read my essay comment.
So it made me wonder, What kind of comments to bloggers prefer?
Short and to the point or longer more detailed comments?
For myself, I like both. Short comments can be nice, especially because some people don’t have a whole lot to add, but longer comments give me something to work with. I think I’m more likely to reply to a longer comment, because I have something to reply to.
Most shorter comments I’ve seen don’t give me much to work with -they’re right to the point- so I have a harder time responding to them, so sometimes I don’t. I’m not the best at socializing, so a lot of the times I don’t know what to say.
I do like them though, since all comments are nice.
When I comment of other’s blogs I try to at least leave a sentence, if I can. And if I’m feeling chatty then I’ll try to cut my comment down to a paragraph or two. I do my best not to write out a whole book.
I also usually only comment if I have something to say. There are many many times where I read a post, and I want to comment to let the blogger know “Hey, I’m reading you!” but I don’t know how to reply to the post, so I end up not commenting at all. I’m not one of those people that can throw out some quick generic comment.
And my next question: What about commenting on older posts?
Do you comment on older posts? As a blogger, do you care if people comment on older posts?
I, myself, don’t mind if people do it. But when it comes to someone else’s blog I tend to avoid it. Even if the post is only a couple days old - and I really have something to say - I usually won’t. I feel awkward commenting on an old post. I feel like the conversation for that post is over and I should just move on to a newer one.
So bloggers and readers: What kind of comments do you prefer and what kind do you usually leave?

I’m just happy to get comments.
I’ve never gotten a one word comment, but I leave them, LOL. If something is funny, I tell the blogger with a “LMAO!”
I’ve never really gotten a comment that was so long I didn’t want to read it…
You can leave your book like comments on my blog, LOL.
Ha, yeah, I’m happy just to get comments too. Long or short.
A little while ago I left a 442 word comment for someone, and after I posted it I thought “Gah, he’s not going to want to read all that.” x.X
Sometimes I just can’t shut up XD
For me, I just comment on whatever interests me on the blog, and the comments are as long or as short as I want them to be. The blogger should be grateful.
I comment when something interests me whether the post is old or new.
I prefer comments from new readers to be a valuable addition to the conversation. I want to know that they’re adding their comment to do more than just pimp themselves. From older readers, with whom I’m more familiar, I don’t really care. Of course, most of my long-time readers only comment when they have something to say, so I guess that’s why I don’t worry about them.
Leon,
Why? Are you that insightful? I always consider another blogger’s space to be theirs and am thankful they welcome me to it. I would never assume another blogger should be grateful to me for my comment. That’s the height of arrogance.
I don’t really care if they are short or long as long as they sound like the person who wrote it actually read the post and isn’t just spamming.
I love comments. Big or small, tiny or tall, love them all. I don’t mind comments on old post because I use HaloScan and that allows me to see new comments in my dashboard.
However, when I was on Diaryland it was frustrating, because I had to search for the post to find the comment. But D-land is a thing of the past for me, so no worries.
I do think that sometimes people are afraid to comment because they want to be very witty or funny or insightful and they think their comment will not be valued.
I wish they didn’t feel that way. I love all of the comments I get, even if it is simply to say, “Go Girl.”
And that concludes my thoughts on comments.
I’d take any kind of comments at the moment, nobody seems to be commenting on my blog lately.
I myself like to leave at least a sentence in a comment, but usually I end up writing a few sentences of waffle.

Any kind of comment is fine. I appreciate that you took the time to read the post and I will love any kind of comment as long as it isn’t spam.
Personally, I read every new comment I get even if it is on older posts. It can be useful to comment on older posts, because it can reignite conversation.
