So, I was surfing Digg and came across a post by Jezebel called “American Apparel Will Make You Look Like A Fat Hooker” and it got me thinking.

What’s wrong with clothes for skinnier people?

In the video they mention that if you don’t have the ideal body then the clothes are offensive. But maybe their clothes aren’t meant for normal-sized people. Maybe their clothes are meant for skinnier people.

Men’s clothing stores sell… men’s clothing. As a female, I don’t march in there and throw a fit about them being sexist because they don’t sell female clothing. Why? Because I’m not their target market. They are targeted to males. And that’s okay.

And there are also clothing stores that are targeted toward bigger people. I don’t march in there and bitch either. Why? Because I’m not their target market.

So maybe these AA clothes aren’t targeted toward normal-sized people, maybe they’re for skinnier people. And why is that offensive?

I’m a skinny girl. I’m about five-foot three-and-a-half inches tall and 108 pounds. And no, I’m not anorexic. In fact, I can be a little piggy during cooler weather (warmer weather makes me feel sick if I eat a lot).

And as a skinny girl I don’t fit in all “normal” sized clothing. T-shirts I’m okay in, but dresses don’t work so well on me. I don’t fill them out very well and look like a 12 year old dressing up in adult clothing.

So what’s wrong with clothes being targeted to skinnier people like me? We need clothes that fit, too.

And I don’t think the clothes are offensive just because they don’t fit normal-sized people. Extra large clothes don’t fit well on normal-sized people, does that mean they’re offensive too? Why is it only clothes for skinnier people that are a problem?

Seriously now, instead of complaining about clothes that don’t fit you, go find clothes that do. Different types of clothing are targeted towards different types of people. Some people are bigger, some smaller, some male, some female. There’s so many variety it’s pointless to complain about one store just because some of the clothes don’t fit you.

All clothes aren’t going to fit all people and there are some smaller people out there that would like to find clothes that fit well without having to shop in the junior’s department.

(Please note: I don’t actually like those clothes, but this is about size not style. This is also not a bash to the girls in the video, I just don’t understand why there can’t be any clothes geared toward smaller people without someone else getting upset.)

I think a lot of the folks who rant about this do so because they feel that there’s less clothing out there that caters to the plus-sized crowd. I must say though that I agree with you completely. And don’t get me started on women who refer to those who’re heavier as “real women”. Just like you, I’m skinny (it’s in my genes) and have never weighed more than 100 pounds (I’m 5′1″). Last time I checked, I’m still a “real woman”.

Yeah, no one seems to like us skinny people anymore. If you’re skinny then everyone is like “OMG ANOREXIC!”
